Dr. Kellyann Bone Broth vs. Bluebird Provisions: Products, Macros and More

There are many health and wellness brands making bone broth. But not all bone broth is created equal. Here is a comparison article: Dr Kellyann Bone Broth vs. Bluebird Provisions.

Bone broth has many health benefits, however, it is crucial to be aware of the quality of bone broth you are investing in. This is regardless of whether you are trying bone broth for the first time, using it for a keto diet or are a regular bone broth sipper.

Some of the most popular bone broths online are not providing the correct nutrition they should. These brands cut corners on sourcing and are typically manufactured in massive supplement manufacturing facilities.

One popular brand on the market is Dr. Kellyann Bone Broth. Let’s do a deep dive into their bone broth and see if they are a good match for you.

Dr. Kellyann offers a range of collagen and bone broth products. They come in powder and frozen form, we’ll focus on the powder and frozen bone broth for the purpose of this review.

take the bone broth quiz

Dr. Kellyann Bone Broth Powder Calories and Macronutrients

They have one bone broth powder product which includes 8 ingredients. Here is the macronutrient breakdown:

Serving size: 1 packet (18.5 grams)
Calories: 70 kcal
Fat: 0 grams
Carbohydrates: 2 grams
Dietary Fiber: 0 grams
Protein: 15 grams

Dr. Kellyann Liquid Bone Broth Calories and Macronutrients

They have three flavors of liquid bone broth: chicken bone broth, beef bone broth and AIP chicken bone broth. For the sake of this review, I’ll focus on beef and chicken bone broth.

Dr. Kellyann Chicken Bone Broth

Serving size: 1 cup (240 grams)
Calories: 50 kcal
Fat: 1.5 grams
Carbohydrates: 1 grams
Dietary Fiber: 0 grams
Total Sugars: 1 grams
Protein: 10 grams
Potassium: 210 mg

Dr. Kellyann Beef Bone Broth

Serving size: 1 cup (240 grams)
Calories: 50 kcal
Fat: 1.5 grams
Carbohydrates: 1 grams
Dietary Fiber: 0 grams
Total Sugars: 1 grams
Protein: 10 grams
Potassium: 210 mg

You’ll notice that the bone broth powder contains more protein per serving than the liquid bone broth. The bone broth powder also contains less fat than the liquid bone broth.

The carb content of the bone broth powder is double that of the liquid bone broth. I suspect this is due to the added ingredients they use. Interestingly, the liquid bone broth contains 1 g of sugar per serving, while the bone broth powder does not.

As for bone broth calories, the bone broth powder has more per serving than the liquid (70 vs. 50).

From a macronutrient standpoint, Dr. Kellyann bone broth has lots of protein. However, there are some carbohydrates in all bone broth products and some fat in the liquid bone broth. This may be an issue if you are following a low carb or keto diet.

Lastly, there are no hydrating electrolytes listed on the label aside from potassium, which has  4% of your daily intake.

Next, let’s take a look at the ingredient lists.

Dr. Kellyann Bone Broth Ingredients

Spreadsheet comparing all bone broth powders

Dr. Kellyann Powdered Bone Broth Ingredients:

Chicken bone broth powder, Natural flavors, Grass fed-bovine hydrolyzed collagen, Salt, Cauliflower powder, Minced green onion, Parsley, Reishi mushroom powder, Turmeric extract.

Dr. Kellyann Chicken Bone Broth Ingredients:

Organic chicken bone broth (Water, Chicken bones, Carrots, Celery, Onions, Lemons, Garlic, Ginger, Peppercorns, Bay leaves, Apple cider vinegar, Parsley, Thyme).

Dr. Kellyann Beef Bone Broth Ingredients:

Organic beef bone broth (Water, Beef bones, Carrots, Celery, Onions, Garlic, Ginger, Peppercorns, Bay leaves, Apple cider vinegar, Sea Salt, Parsley, Thyme).

Ingredient Highlights

In the liquid bone broth, Dr. Kellyann does a great job using organic beef bones and organic chicken bones as opposed to bones from industrial feedlots. They also use organic vegetables in the liquid bone broth. These are free from pesticides.

The powdered bone broth uses bone broth powder and collagen to get protein. It is difficult to weigh in on this without knowing the sourcing. Finally, some people like the taste of mushroom extracts and turmeric in their bone broth and some do not.

Ingredients to be Aware of:

While Dr. Kellyann uses some high-quality ingredients, there are a few red flag marks that you should be aware of.

Let’s start with their powdered bone broth

Natural Flavors

First, ‘Natural flavors’ as the second ingredient, is a cause for concern. This means that there are more ‘Natural flavors’ than any other ingredient in the formula, except for chicken bone broth powder.

It warrants a whole article, but ‘Natural flavors’ are typically a yeast derived flavor enhancer. These ingredients are common in processed meat products (or veggie burgers) as they help mimic the taste of meat. They are also used as an alternative to MSG to make glutamic acid.

Grass fed-bovine hydrolyzed collagen

Collagen sourcing is truly the wild west (scroll down in that article to see). Why? Collagen is now a commodity, and it’s difficult to assess without knowing the sourcing.

You might be curious about the goal of adding collagen to a bone broth powder. Some brands do it to boost the protein content because it is cheaper than bone broth powder.

This brings their cost down but adds protein on the label. Other brands use it to give slightly different types of collagen in their bone broth powder.

Salt: This is usually to add flavor. It is interesting to note that they use regular salt in the bone broth powder, but sea salt in the liquid bone broth.

The remaining ingredients (Cauliflower powder, Minced green onion, Reishi mushroom extract, Turmeric extract) are used to add some extra nutrition and taste. To each their own taste, so you can decide for yourself if it’s right for you.

Sometimes brands (not necessarily the case here) stuff healthy and buzzword ingredients in minuscule quantities in order to market and promote the ingredients in their products.

The quantities used are not typically enough to reap any health benefit .Read more on how that works here

Now let’s discuss liquid bone broth ingredients

Overall, this is a solid ingredient list. There is no healthy ingredient stuffing on the label.

The big question is Organic. This liquid bone broth line makes Organic claims on their label and uses Organic ingredients but is not Certified Organic. At least you cannot see a Certified Organic sticker on their label.

Without a third party Organic Certificate, it is difficult for consumers to verify these claims and trust the sourcing. You can read more about why Organic and third party certificates are so important on the blog.

Also, apple cider vinegar providing additional health benefits in bone broth is a myth (see #1).

Lastly, some people with autoimmune issues are sensitive to peppercorns, garlic and ginger. But they do have an AIP compliant bone broth, which is great!

Dr. Kellyann vs. Bluebird Provisions Bone Broth

So, where does Dr. Kellyann bone broth stack up against Bluebird Provisions Bone Broth?

Let’s take a look side by side of the Bone Broth Powder first.

Dr. Kellyann vs. Bluebird Provisions

Bluebird Provisions has more protein per gram of bone broth powder when you equate the serving size.

Bluebird Provisions also has 0 g of fat and 0 g of carbs while Dr. Kellyann Bone Broth has 0 g of fat but 2 g of carbs per serving. This brings the calories higher per serving for Dr. Kellyann as well.

This may not seem significant, but if you use more than one serving, carbs can quickly add up — especially if you’re adding other ingredients to your bone broth.

Lastly, Bluebird Provisions provides hydrating electrolytes in the form of 300 mg of potassium per serving. Dr. Kellyann has no potassium listed on their label.

Now let’s look at the liquid bone broth side by side.

Dr. Kellyann bone broth vs. Bluebird Provisions

For simplicity, let’s compare chicken bone broth.

Bluebird Provisions has slightly more protein (11 vs. 10 g), but this is a negligible amount. Bluebird Provisions has fewer calories with 0 g of fat and 0 g of carbs per serving. While Dr. Kellyann has 1.5 g fat and 1 g of carbs ( 1 g sugar) per serving.

Like with the powder, if you are on a keto diet and adding extra carb sources to your mug of bone broth, it may add up if you are using Dr. Kellyann liquid bone broth.

Lastly, Bluebird Provisions has almost twice as much potassium per serving (400 mg vs. 210 mg).

Potassium is important for hydration, nerve and muscle function. It can lower blood pressure and water retention, protect against stroke and prevent osteoporosis and kidney stones (1).

Bluebird Provisions vs. Dr. Kellyann Ingredients

Bluebird Provisions and Dr. Kellyann are both keto and paleo friendly, dairy free, soy free and gluten free. However, there are some large differences in ingredients used.

Chicken bone broth (dried)

Dr. Kellyann Bone Broth Powder Ingredients:

Bluebird Provisions Liquid Organic Bone Broth Powder Ingredients (Chicken):

Dr. Kellyann Liquid Bone Broth Ingredients (Chicken):

Organic chicken bone broth (Water, Chicken bones, Carrots, Celery, Onions, Lemons, Garlic, Ginger, Peppercorns, Bay leaves, Apple cider vinegar, Parsley, Thyme).

Bluebird Provisions Ingredient Highlights

Bluebird Provisions uses just one simple ingredient in their bone broth powder: Chicken bone broth. No flavor additives, salt or extra ingredients. This let’s the bone broth speak for itself in terms of taste and nutrition.

For liquid bone broth, Bluebird Provisions uses a similar ingredient list to Dr. Kellyann, aside from a few crucial differences.

First, Bluebird Provisions is Certified Organic, meaning the ingredients are sourced from Certified Organic farms that go through strict third party audits and animal welfare assessments.

These animals are raised in a natural, low stress environment with plenty of pasture to forage year round.

Second, Bluebird Provisions has no ingredients that some consumers (autoimmune, GAPS, FODMAPS etc) may be sensitive to (no peppercorns, apple cider vinegar, ginger or garlic).

What About Sustainable Packaging?

Bluebird Provisions uses a 100% recyclable standup pouch for their Instant Bone Broth Powder. Dr. Kellyann uses single serve sachets inside a master package.

If you purchase a 7 pack, that is  individual packages per serving and another package to hold these 7 packages.

If you are environmentally conscious, this is a lot of unnecessary packaging for you to consider.

Bone Broth Powder Mixability

Bluebird Provisions has many positive reviews touting the mixability of the powder. It seems as though Dr. Kellyann’s bone broth mixes well as well.

Takeaway

When it comes to paleo and keto friendly bone broth, quality is crucial. While Dr. Kellyann does a great job of sourcing high-quality ingredients, certified organic is always going to be the winner.

Moreover, simplicity in ingredients is also important to recognize when it comes to bone broth powder.

As a general rule when looking at supplements or powders, always be on the lookout for filler ingredients like ‘Natural flavors,’ salt, yeast extracts and sweeteners.

You should also take note of buzz worthy ingredients at the end of an ingredient list. These are typically in too small quantities to provide any health benefits.

Bluebird Provisions does a great job in avoiding harmful, low qualities ingredients from artificial sources.

If you’re keto or low carb, then you must pay attention to total carb count in your food. Bluebird Provisions has zero carbs in all of their bone broth, making it an excellent choice for keto dieters.

Some delicious ways you can enjoy your bone broth daily are:

  1. Use chicken bone broth in your smoothie instead of milk or juice for extra collagen protein and electrolytes.
  2. Drink a cup of bone broth pre-workout to fuel your exercise.
  3. Drink bone broth first thing in the morning for gut health.
