Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein Review

Looking for an honest review of Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein without the BS? Read this now and learn why this popular brand is not the best choice for your money.

Bone broth is the most nutritious beverage on the planet. It is made from simmering bones and meat from animals in water for 24-48 hours.

Many brands are now making protein powders out of it. These are convenient sources that may taste ok, but are they good for you?

Read on to find out.

Before we get started, I need to mention that my company, Bluebird Provisions, makes a traditional bone broth powder the old fashioned way. It has 12 g protein with the hydrating electrolytes and nutrients that these protein powders lack.

With that out of the way let's get into it.

Pure

Chicken Bone Broth Protein Concentrate

Ingredient Highlights

They do a great job in using bone broth protein concentrate as their first ingredient and sole protein source.

The ‘pure’ variety has a simple ingredient list.

Ingredients to be Aware of:

There are a few things that you should be aware of. We’ll list them below:

Natural Vanilla Flavor / Natural Chocolate Flavor with Other Natural Flavor

‘Natural flavor’ as the second ingredient, is something you should take note of. They are typically not found in bone broth. What are they?

They are usually made from yeast extract and used as a color and spice enhancer.

You’ll find them in many processed things, including meat products or fake meat as they simulate the seasoning of meat. They're are also used as an alternative to MSG to make glutamic acid (1).

Xanthan Gum

Xanthan gum is a thickener or binder used in making some foods and medications. It can keep textures from changing, and hold ingredients in place. It is made by fermenting sugar with bacteria then processing it.

Guar Gum

Guar gum is an additive that’s found throughout the food supply. It has been associated with negative side effects and even banned for use in some products. It’s used in processed products because of its ability to absorb water to thicken and bind products (2).

Stevia (Leaf) Extract

Stevia is a plant found in Paraguay, whose leaves were originally used for tea.

There aren’t many long-term studies on stevia. One study showed a reduced sperm rate in rats fed high stevia doses (3).

This led the FDA to reject the stevia plant for use as a food ingredient in the 1990s. However, it was approved in 2011.

Stevia extract is processed (and often bleached) to extract certain compounds from the stevia plant.

Plus, most food processors add a filler that’s usually derived from a genetically modified ingredient (like maltodextrin, a processed starch made from GMO corn).

Luo Hun Guo (Fruit) Extract

Also known as monk fruit sweetener / extract. Monk fruit sweeteners are made from the fruit's extract.

They are sometimes blended with dextrose or other ingredients to balance sweetness. Monk fruit extract is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. The extract has zero calories, zero sodium, and zero fat.

It is new and exciting but there is not a lot of research on it.

Is Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein Keto Friendly?

Defining keto friendly is fairly straightforward. Will the bone broth keep you in ketosis?

There are 20 g of protein and 2 g of carbs per serving -- this falls within the keto-friendly category.

Bone Broth Protein Reviews on Taste

Taste is an incredibly subjective measure of a bone broth. As such, we will not off our tasting suggestions, but look to some third party product reviews to gauge the feedback.

Here are some recent expert reviews from Amazon:

“definitely worth taking.”

multi collagen product review

“I had bought several sample packs and was very impressed by the chocolate flavor bone broth protein powder… But this product is sweetened with Stevia. I think Stevia is horrible and sits on the tongue like ivory soap.”

“I could not stomach this product, mostly because the stevia used to sweeten it has made it unusable. They made it right with a full refund. I have ordered the pure protein which has no additives.”

Mixability Questions

Mixability is the most difficult aspect to get right in a bone broth powder. So how do they stack up?

Let’s peruse a few more Amazon user reviews.

"It’s good blended with milk and banana or strawberries but on it’s own in water, Not great."

"I really like the it. It doesn’t blend as easily as other powders."

"Great flavor, easy to blend in my oatmeal."

Food Packaging Questions

They use HDPE plastic containers for their packaging. These are industry standard for dietary supplements and vitamins. They are not easily recyclable.

So what are you do to with this product? It is decent but has some underlying issues. I did not even mention the issues with sourcing, animal welfare and the heavy processing that goes into making their products.

What does it taste like?

There are usually taste concerns with bone broth powders. That being said, according to some Amazon reviews, Bluebird Provisions gets great feedback on their taste.

“I really like the taste of this bone broth. I have tried A LOT of different bone broth brands to be able to have it weekly. I have been researching Bluebird for a while, and liked their approach to making bone broth, so when it popped up here in Amazon I was ready to try it. I just boil the water with a little salt and pepper, then I add the powder in a mug. To mix it all I use a milk frother.”

“Super love this! I couldn’t recommend this brand enough! So rich and flavorful.”

“Very impressed with this Bone Broth Powder. It’s become a staple in my morning routine and the health benefits are substantial. Big Recommend.”

Bone Broth Mixability

According to reviewers, Bluebird Provisions bone broth mixes very well in boiling water.

“I love the convenience of the bone broth powder. I was skeptical, but this one is different. I drink a drink a cup daily before workouts and it tastes delicious! It mixes great and tastes like homemade bone broth.”

“I appreciate that the packaging is not wasteful (it's a bag and not a large round plastic container), that the product dissolves well without any caking”

Takeaway

When it comes to collagen rich bone broth, quality is important. Bluebird Provisions and Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein offer great options.

As a general rule when looking at bone broth, research what the brand specializes in. Do they make only bone broth? Or do they make 100s of other products as well.

Also, the fact is that bone broth protein is highly processed and comes from overseas sources. Look for a real bone broth powder instead.

Bluebird Provisions offers bone broth that is high in protein and full of electrolytes in recyclable packaging. This makes it an excellent choice for anyone looking for the amazing benefits of it.
