Read on to find out.

Before we get into it, I want to mention that my company makes and sells a traditionally made bone broth powder with the same protein as Dr Axe's products. Except ours is actual bone broth powder, where their's is closer to collagen.

More on that below.

Who is Dr Josh Axe

Dr. Axe is a popular online marketer turned author and business owner. You probably see his face in advertising all over facebook and instagram.

He started a dietary supplement brand under his own name which was later rebranded to Ancient Nutrition. They changed the name because of some lawsuits and claims of heavy metal toxicity in their products. These were unsubstantiated.

In terms of qualifications, he is not a medical doctor, but a chiropractor (where he gets the doctor designation from).

He sells a wide range of books, courses, vitamins, minerals and natural health products, including:

  • Collagen peptides
  • Superfoods
  • Vegan protein
  • Probiotics
  • Electrolytes
  • Essential oils
  • Antioxidants

List of Complaints

There are a few ingredients in Dr. Axe bone broth that you will want to be aware of.

We’ll list them below:

Natural Vanilla Flavor / Natural Chocolate Flavor with Other Natural Flavor

‘Natural vanilla / chocolate flavor’ is worth noting, especially because it is the second ingredient listed.

You will usually not find ‘natural flavors’ in bone broth. What are they?

‘Natural flavors’ are typically made from yeast extract and used to enhance flavor.

You’ll find ‘natural flavors’ in many processed meat products and foods (or fake meat) as they mimic the taste of meat. Natural flavors are also used in place of MSG to make glutamic acid (1).

Xanthan Gum

Xanthan gum is a thickener used in processed foods and medications. Xanthan can keep textures from changing and hold ingredients in place. You can make xanthan gum by fermenting sugar with bacteria.

Guar Gum

Guar gum is a food additive found in many processed foods. Guar is associated with negative side effects and even banned for use in some products. Guar gum is widely used because of its ability to absorb water to thicken and bind products together (2).

Stevia (Leaf) Extract

Stevia is native plant to South America, whose leaves were originally used for tea.

Stevia and relatively new, without long-term studies. One study showed a reduced sperm rate in rats fed high stevia diets (3).

The FDA originally rejected stevia because of this in the 1990s. However, stevia was approved in 2011.

Stevia extract made from processing the plant to extract certain compounds.

The tricky thing about stevia extract is that most manufacturers add a filler that’s usually derived from a genetically modified ingredient (like maltodextrin, a processed starch made from GMO corn).

Luo Hun Guo (Fruit) Extract

Also known as monk fruit extract. Monk fruit is sometimes blended with dextrose or other ingredients to balance sweetness. Monk fruit extract is 150-300 times sweeter than sugar. The extract has zero calories, zero carbohydrates, zero sodium, and zero fat.

It is new and exciting but there is not a lot of research on it.

Are the products keto diet friendly?

Dr. Axe bone broth has 20 g of protein and 2 g of carbs per serving -- this falls within the keto-friendly category.
