Are their products safe for you? Learn why a few ingredients are concerning for your gut health and longevity in this article.
There is a lot of crucial information you need to know.
What are the health benefits of bone broth?
Bone broth has many health benefits, however, it is crucial to be aware of the quality of bone broth you are investing in.
This is regardless of whether you are trying bone broth for the first time, using it for keto diets, fasting or are a regular sipper.
Some of the most popular bone broths online are not providing the correct vitamins they should.
These brands cut corners by using cheap fillers (natural flavors) and are manufactured in massive supplement facilities.
One popular brand on the market is Dr Kellyann, who is famous for her bone broth diet meal plan. Let’s do a deep dive into and see if they are a good option for your goals.
First a quick note: if you're looking for a better alternative, go ahead and try Bluebird Provisions.
This brand doesn't use sketchy things, has more collagen and less sodium than doctor Kellyann.

Dr Kellyann Bone Broth Packets Nutrition
Dr. Kellyann offers a range of collagen and bone broth packets. We’ll focus on the powder and frozen versions for the purpose of this review.
Dr Kellyann Bone Broth Protein Powder Nutrition Facts
They have powder products which includes 8 inputs. It is intended as a replacement for meals to help with weight loss. Here is the macronutrient breakdown:

Liquid Bone Broth Nutrients
They have three flavors of frozen: chicken, beef and AIP bone broths. For the sake of this review, I’ll focus on the first two.
Paleo Chicken Bone Broth
Size: 1 cup (240 grams)
Energy: 50 kcal
Sodium: 120 mg

Fats: 0 grams
Carbohydrates: 3 grams
Dietary Fiber: 0 grams

Potassium: 201 mg
You’ll notice that the powder has more proteins than the frozen one. The powder also more salt than the frozen version.
They're both used as meal replacements, according to the bone broth diet.
The carb content of the frozen is 2-3g while the powder is zero. I suspect this is due to the added vegetables they use. Interestingly, the frozen chicken one has 2 g of sugar, while the powder has none.
As for calories, the powder has more than the frozen (70 vs. 50).
From a nutrient standpoint, Dr. Kellyann has lots of amino acids. However, there are some carbohydrates all of the frozen versions.
This may be an issue if you are in ketosis, avoiding high carb foods or on a keto diet program.
Lastly, there are no hydrating electrolytes listed on the label aside from potassium, which has 4% of your daily intake.
Next, let’s take a look at the ingredient lists.
What are the key ingredients in Dr. Kellyann's bone broth?
The key ingredients that you need to be concerned with in Dr Kellyann's bone broth are natural flavors, collagen and salt.
There are also herbs and minced vegetables like turmeric, green onion and cauliflower to balance out the taste. Let's look below for specifics in each product.
Powdered Bone Broth
Chicken Bone Broth powder, Grass fed-bovine hydrolyzed collagen, Cauliflower powder, Natural flavors, Garlic powder, Onion powder, Minced green onion, Parsley, Salt, Reishi mushroom powder, Turmeric extract.
Frozen Chicken Bone Broth
Chicken bone broth (Water, Chicken Bones), Organic Carrots, Organic Celery, Organic Onions, Organic Lemons, Organic Apple Cider vinegar, Organic Parsley, Organic Ginger, Organic Garlic, Organic Thyme, Organic Peppercorns, Organic Bay Leaves.
Frozen Beef Bone Broth Ingredient list:
Organic beef bone broth (water and beef bones), Organic carrots, Organic celery, Organic onion, organic apple cider vinegar, organic parsley, organic ginger, organic garlic, organic thyme, organic sea salt, organic peppercorns, organic bay leaves.
What's in dr kellyann's bone broth?
In the frozen bone broths, Dr. Kellyann does a great job using organic bones as opposed ones from industrial feedlots. They also use organic vegetables in the frozen one. These are free from pesticides.
The powdered version uses powder and collagen. It is difficult to weigh in on this without knowing the sourcing. Finally, some people like the taste of herbs, mushroom extracts and turmeric and some do not.
Dangerous Ingredients to be Aware of:
While Dr. Kellyann uses some high-quality things but there some eyebrow raising things that you should be aware of.
‘Natural flavors’ as the 4th ingredient is a cause for concern. This means that there are more of them by weight than any other ingredient in the food, except the first three.
It warrants a whole article, but they are typically a yeast derived taste enhancer. These additives are common in processed meat products (or veggie burgers) as they help mimic the taste of meat. They are also used as an alternative to MSG to make glutamic acid.
Grass Fed Bovine Collagen
Collagen sourcing is truly the wild west (scroll down in that article to see). Why? It is now a commodity, and it’s difficult to assess without knowing the sourcing.
You might be curious about the goal of adding collagen to it. Some companies do it to boost the protein / amino acids content because it is cheaper than real food.
This is something that brings their cost down. Others use it to give slightly different amino acids in their product.
This is usually to make it taste better. It is interesting to note that they use regular in the powder, but sea in the frozen version. The problem is that too much sodium is awful for your blood pressure.
The rest (Cauliflower powder, Minced green onion, Reishi mushroom extract, Turmeric extract) are used to add some extra fluff and taste. To each their own taste, so you can decide for yourself if it’s right for you.
Sometimes vendors (not necessarily the case here) stuff healthy and buzzword stuff in minuscule quantities in order to market and promote them in their products.
The quantities used are not typically enough to reap any health benefit.
Now let’s discuss frozen bone broth
Overall, this is a solid ingredient list. There is no healthy ingredient stuffing on the label.
They should be commended for bringing an organic frozen product to market. It is no easy to do.
We're nitpicking here, but apple cider vinegar providing additional health benefits is a myth (see #1).
Lastly, some people with autoimmune issues are sensitive to peppercorns, garlic and ginger. But they do have an AIP compliant option, which is great!
What do customers say about Dr. Kellyann's bone broth?
Customers have mixed reviews about Dr Kellyann's bone broth. They get lots of positive reviews on their website, but website reviews are notoriously cherry picked and unreliable.
We must look to third party websites like Amazon to see what customers really think. Here are a few recent Amazon reviews:

This customer was not happy about the price deception and the flavor was not up to par.
This reviewer liked the convenience but said it did not dissolve well into water.
Finally, this reviewer had diarrhea for 4 days after consuming it. This is likely because of the natural flavors and preservatives used to flavor this product.
How does Dr. Kellyann's bone broth compare to other brands?
Dr. Kellyann's bone broth has more natural flavors, fillers and preservatives than you see in other options that make traditional versions.
Let's compare them to Bluebird Provisions: another favorite option on Amazon or online.
It has more protein per gram of powder when you equate the size.
Dr Kellyann is higher in calories at 70 / serving.
Lastly, Bluebird provides hydrating electrolytes in the form of 300 mg of potassium. Dr. Kellyann has 340 mg potassium listed on their label. This is important of you're fasting or eating a paleo diet.
Let’s look at the frozen chicken bone broth side by side
It has more collagen (11 vs. 10 g), but this is a negligible amount. It has fewer calories with 0 g of fat and 0 g of carbs. While Dr. Kellyann has 0 g fat and 2 g of carbs ( 2 g sugar).
If you are on a keto diet and adding lots of unnecessary carb sources to your mug, it may add up if you are using Dr. Kellyann.
Lastly, it has almost twice as much potassium per serving (400 vs. 189 mg).
Potassium is important for hydration, nerve and muscle function. It can lower blood pressure and water retention, protect against stroke and prevent osteoporosis and kidney stones (1).
Dr Kellyann Ingredients Compared to Other Brands
Bluebird Provisions and Dr. Kellyann are both keto and paleo friendly, dairy free, soy free and gluten free. However, there are some large differences in ingredients used.
Check the list from a competitive product. Notice anything?
Doctor Kellyann Ingredients
Now let's look here. Lot's of strange things right?
Note all of the fancy herbs at the end? These are difficult to tell if they add any benefit because they're in such small quantities.
Bluebird Provisions Organic Bone Broth Frozen
Water, Organic Chicken Bones, Organic Chicken Skin, Organic Carrots, Organic Onions, Organic Celery, Organic Parsley, Organic Rosemary, Organic Bay Leaf, Himalayan Salt.
Bluebird Ingredient Highlights
They use just one simple ingredient: bone broth. No flavor additives, sodium or extra fluff. This let’s the natural nutrition speak for itself in terms of taste, vitamins and nutrition.
For frozen versions, they use a similar ingredient list to Dr. Kellyann, aside from a few crucial differences.
They have no inputs that some consumers (autoimmune, GAPS, FODMAPS etc) may be sensitive to (no peppercorns, apple cider vinegar, ginger, dairy or garlic). Note: Kellyann has an AIP option which removes these ingredients.
What About Sustainable Packaging?
Bluebird uses a 100% recyclable standup pouch for their Instant Powder. Dr. Kellyann uses single serve sachets inside a master package.
If you purchase a 7 pack, that is individual packages per serving and another package to hold these packages.
If you are environmentally conscious, this creates lots of unnecessary packaging for you to consider.
Bone Broth Powder Mixability
Bluebird as many positive reviews touting the mixability of the powder. It seems as though Dr. Kellyann’s bone broth mixes well as well. See the image above/
Is Dr Kellyann Bone Broth Safe?
When it comes to paleo eating and keto friendly products, quality is crucial. While Dr. Kellyann does a decent job, there are confusing ingredients that you don't typically see in bone broths.
Simplicity is also important to recognize. You want the vitamins and nutrients in their natural form.
As a general rule when looking at supplements or powders, always be on the lookout for fillers like ‘Natural flavors,’ salt, yeast extracts and sweeteners.
You should also take note of buzz worthy things at the end of an ingredient list. These are typically in too small quantities to provide any health benefits.
Bluebird Provisions does a great job in avoiding harmful, low quality inputs from artificial sources.
If you’re keto or low carb, then you must pay attention to total carb count in your food. Bluebird Provisions has zero carbs in all of theirs, making it an excellent choice for keto dieters.
Some delicious recipes, diet and intermittent fasting tips for how you can enjoy it daily are:
- Use it in your fruit smoothie instead of milk or juice for extra amino acids, vitamins and electrolytes.
- Drink a cup pre-workout to fuel your exercise.
- Drink it for breakfast or during your mini-fast for gut health.
- Add it to everything if you are eating paleo.
- Use as a mid day snack with veggies to curb your hunger cravings
- Add it to whatever you are cooking: rice, etc

Thanks for reading the article and for your note. To answer your question, we do offer a product with no rosemary: it is our Instant Bone Broth Powder. This just has water and non-gmo chicken bones as the ingredients.
Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
I am interested in trying your product but I am intolerant to rosemary. Does rosemary really need to be included? People like me with a lot of allergies and immune issues prefer the plainest ingredients and we can add our tolerable spices. Something to consider in the future – a plain and simple, low ingredient version for the many ingredient allergy sufferers.
Thanks for reading. I’m glad you found my article. Weight loss is tricky and really out of my area of expertise and comfort.
I would question why you want to lose the weight first. Then figure out if you can find a sustainable way to get there. Diets don’t really work in the long-term. But changing your habits does.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the comparison with the frozen and powder. I also appreciated and agreed with the comment about how long the infomercial was but I must admit, she almost had me. I’m trying to lose about 15 pounds but don’t know if bone broth is the way to go. The simple answer to lose weight is eat less and eat the right foods but it’s easier said than done. I’m currently trying intermittent fasting. (start eating at 10am and stop after 6pm)
Glad you found it useful Lynn. You are most welcome!
