8 Best Tongkat Ali Supplements

Best For Working Out
Best Cost Effective Option
Best Tongkat Ali Brand: SOLARAY
SOLARAY is best all around tongkat ali brand on the market. There are one of the first legitimate brands that offered this herb for sale online. They've enjoyed a fantastic reputation for their quality over the years.
I first used the tongkat ali from SOLARAY back in 2019 (400 mg daily). I was depressed and having issues with energy when working out and running. After about a month of using this brand I felt like better and more confident version of myself.
I also had crazy energy for workouts.
SOLARAY Tongkat Ali is naturally sourced from the roots of the Eurycoma longifolia tree in Southeast Asia. This fairly traded, 100% and is the only product on my whole list that is NON-GMO Verified. This means it is free from any genetically modified ingredients.
The quality is what really separates SOLARAY from others. They've been around for so long that they have a serious reputation to worry about. They use independent, 3rd party testing and package the product in Utah.
The brand is also dedicated to the environment by using recyclable packaging, partnering with One Tree Planted and installing solar panels in their manufacturing facility.
Best Pure Product: AKARALI Tongkat Ali Extract Longjack 200:1
Get excited, because AKARALI is another fantastic option on the market. Here are a few reasons why:
First, it is packaged in the USA in a GMP compliant facility that does 3rd party testing. Second, they use quality sourcing from Malaysia, which is the gold standard when it comes to the herb.
Speaking of herb extracts, they use the Physta patented extraction, which uses the most potent, mature Tongkat Ali roots (4-5 years old) instead of teenage plants that are harvested prematurely.
There's 200 mg per capsule at a 1.5% Eurycomanone percentage.
I love that these are vegan and halal friendly and suitable for any diet type.
This is without a doubt the highest quality option on the list. Some reviewers complain about the price point, but you cant put a price on trust. This industry and herbal products in particular are rife with corruption, so you get back you pay for.
Best For Working Out: Momentous Tongkat Ali
Momentus tongkat ali came out with a bang in the last year for good reason. It is backed and recommended by Dr. Andrew Huberman, Ph.D. Who is a renowned neuroscientist and tenured professor at Stanford, not to mention the most popular health and wellness podcaster.
But Momentous stands on its own because of the trust the brand has garnered with other products.
It costs a bit more than some other brands, but they make up for it in quality. You get 400 mg of Eurycoma longifolia (botanical name for tongkat ali) per serving.
Sourced from eco-friendly farms, in Southeast Asia, Momentus offers authentic tongkat ali.
I find that Momentous tongkat seems to gently increase my hormone and energy levels -- just enough to notice it after a couple of months. The pills are easy to swallow and theres no aftertaste or anything.
Best Cost Effective Option: Nutricost Tongkat Ali Supplement
Nutricost Tongkat Ali is the best cost effective option on the list. I've used a lot of supplements over the years that do not provide any benefit or difference. This Tongkat Ali is different and I actually noticed a difference in my libido.
I run ultramarathons and need all the extra energy and motivation I can in order to train effectively. This has made a huge difference in my motivation to get through the 'trial of miles.'
Nutricost has healthy 1,000 mg of Tongkat Ali extract per serving. you also get Tribulus Terrestris and BioPerine, which helps to maximize absorption.
I appreciate that Nutricost is a known entity in the supplement game and use a vegan, gluten free and non-gmo formula. They also package the product in a USA based, GMP-compliant facility.
The one drawback is that they use rice flour in the capsules.
Double Wood LJ100 Tongkat Ali
Double Wood is another popular supplement brand that offers the patented LJ100 variety of tongkat ali. This is the standardized version that is used in 15 clinical studies that show positive health benefits.
Most of these studies use a dose of 200 mg of LJ100. Later in the article I'll explain the difference between this version and others.
I love that Double Wood is packaged in the USA (Pennsylvania), using GMP (Good Manufacturing Processes). They make their Certificate of Analysis (COA) available for you to see on their website.
The COA basically tells you that there are no heavy metals, pathogens or bacteria present in the current batch of product.
I found the LJ100 version to work just as well as the regular tongkat extract. I noticed increased motivation and felt like working hard felt really good in the gym and running.
Nootropics Depot 10% Eurycomanone Tongkat Ali
The Nootropics Depot 10% Eurycomanone extract is the mot potent Tongkat Ali supplement on my entire list.
If you are looking for an extra boost, consider giving it a try. A few things that I like about Nootropics depot are the following:
- Third Party Testing: This ensures that you are actually getting the appropriate concentration of the extract.
- Responsible Sourcing: Sourced directly from Indonesia, this ensures you are getting the highest quality form on Tongkat.
I usually use a basic extract, but tried this one for a month and noticed a couple of things.
First, my sleep was better and I didn't feel as tired throughout the day. My wife and I have a newborn at home, so this was a welcome relief.
Second, I felt more motivated to work harder. Not sure if this has to do with the newborn or not, but Ill take it!
Give it a shot if you want to try something stronger than the basic extracts.
Toniiq Tongkat Ali Extract
Toniiq Tongkat Ali Extract is another great option that is made in the USA in a GMP and NSF-approved facility. This gives you peace of mind that you are not getting a supplement with sketchy additives or spiked things that do not belong in it.
The rigorous testing Toniiq uses ensures that the fill weight in consistent and there are no heavy metals in the product.
When it comes to dosage, you get 200 mg of concentrated Eurycoma longifolia at a 200:1 concentration. While it is not the strongest concentration, it is enough to give you a perfect energy boost.
Toniiq sources their product from Indonesia, then ships it to the USA for pacakging.
I like how Toniiq is single ingredient and 3rd party tested. I found the capsules super easy to swallow and noticed my sleep got much better after taking it for a few weeks. I'll keep taking it and report back.
SEVERASYNTH Tongkat Ali for Men
SEVERASYNTH Tongkat Ali is another solid option on the list! Packed with high potency, you get 600 mg of Eurycoma Longifolia (the bioactive extract in Tongkat Ali) per pill.
I heard about SEVERASYNTH from a friend of mine who recommended it. I checked them out and have a bottle coming now to test myself.
Let's take a look at some of the specifics. The product is packaged in the USA, but I can't seem to find any info about 3rd party testing.
The product is sourced from the deep rainforests of Indonesia. It has great reviews and is cost effective.
What is Tongkat Ali?
Tongkat ali is a root extract derived from the Eurycoma longifolia plant. It is often referred to as Malaysian ginseng and is commonly used to address low testosterone and sexual health issues.
This plant is native to Southeast Asia and found abundantly in regions such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. It is thought to help boost testosterone because of it's amino acids and ability to reduce free radical activity.
Botanical Background of Tongkat Ali
The botanical name Eurycoma Longifolia, is native to Southeast Asia and is a shrub-like tree known for its slender appearance and yellow flower clusters. While some people call it Malaysian Ginseng, they are not related.
In Malay, Tongkat Ali means Ali's walking stick, indicating its aphrodisiac properties. The plant has been used for centuries. You can find it from Malaysia and Borneo Island to Thailand, Vietnam and possibly Myanmar.
Tongkat Ali Health Benefits
The health benefits of Tongkat Ali include the following:
- Enhanced Testosterone Levels: The main benefit is its potential to boost testosterone levels in men, based on various studies (1). Higher testosterone levels can contribute to increased muscle strength, mood enhancement and improved sexual performance.
- Improved Libido and Sexual Performance: Research shows that Tongkat Ali can notably enhance sexual health by improving libido and sexual performance in men (2). It has been traditionally used as an aphrodisiac in Southeast Asian regions for centuries.
- Increased Energy and Stamina: Consuming Tongkat Ali (TA) supplement has been linked to increased energy levels and stamina. This is beneficial not just for athletes looking for improved performance but also if you need a boost at work.
- Enhanced Muscle Strength: One study showed increases in muscle strength in aging men and women after taking 400 mg daily for 6 weeks (3).
- Mood and Stress Management: Studies show that 4 weeks of TA helped to reduce stress hormones (salivary cortisol) and subjective feelings of anger, tension and confusion by 13% (4).
- Immune Boosting Benefits: 4 weeks or regular intake significantly boosted the immune system as measured by Scoring of Immunological Vigor (SIV) according to a 2016 study in the Journal of Phytother Res (5).
- Potential Weight Loss Aid: 8 weeks of (100 mg / day) TA supplementation in middle aged men showed a decrease in fat mass and increase in fat-free mass (aka muscle) according to a 2003 study in Japanese men (6). The catch is that you need to strength train while you are taking the supplement.
I personally find that taking TA helps with my mood and motivation more than anything else.
How Long Does it Take for Tongkat Ali to Work
The research shows that you can see benefits from Tongkat Ali in 3 to 4 weeks. Most studies are 4 to 8 weeks which suggest you will notice some changes in that timeframe.
What to Look for in Tongkat Ali Supplements
To make sure you are not wasting your money, you need to look at the following in Tongkat Ali supplements: purity, potency, sourcing, extract ratios, dosage, color, powder vs pills and price.
Sounds like a lot, doesn't it? Don't worry, I will break it all down for you below.
Purity and Potency (Extract Ratio or Percentage)
There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to tongkat ali extract ratios of Eurycomanone percentages.
First is whether you want an extract or the whole dried herb that is ground into a powder. When looking at extracts, many brands brag about high extract ratios. They try to convince you at a higher ratio means a more potent supplement and better results for you in the gym and bedroom.
These brands are wrong and I will explain why. The concentration ratio is used to market the output of the herbal extraction process. These are easily abused by the manufacturers and marketing reasons. A higher extract ratio (10% or 1000:1 or 200:1) does not mean more results, higher quality or health benefits.
The reason being is that manufacturers use bark, leaves and branches to make up this impressive ratio / extract percentage vs using just the 100% root.
Also, these extract ratios are not regulated by the FDA
The oldest and most popular brand on Amazon (SOLARAY) uses a whole, dried herb that is ground into a fine powder then put into capsules. Conversely, many of the new brands use extracts. I prefer to use SOLARAY for the most part because it is the only one that is NON-GMO verified and has a longstanding track record of safety and performance.
Sourcing and Manufacturing
Choosing a supplement cultivated responsibly in a responsible manner and manufactured in a reputable, USA based facility is non-negotiable. But you need to look at where the actual herb is sourced from.
Most products you find are cultivated in Malaysia, Indonesia or China.
About 90% of raw tongkat ali comes from Malaysia. I would generally trust Malaysia sourced products. Indonesian sourced are not see as high quality because of the cross contamination issues due to rampant illegal mining associated with the country.
This leads to soil that is damaged and toxic.
Anything sourced from China is difficult to trust. These products are typically illegally smuggled from Indonesia then packaged at labs in China and exported into the USA market.
The take home point is that if the brand does not tell you where the raw materials are sourced from, do not buy it.
Why are mature roots important?
You want to buy products that are sourced from mature roots because they have had enough time to grow and flourish. Scientists from the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) recommend roots that are 4 to 5 years old.
The problem is that this industry is rife with poachers who pick the plant and root before it matures (after 1-3 years). This results in roots that are not as potent as they should be going in to making extracts that are sold in the US.
Tongkat Ali Herbal Extraction Methods
There are three main extraction methods of tongkat ali:
- Ethanol extraction – most common, cheap to extract but with lower bioactive compounds
- Hot-water extraction – hgher quality bioactive compounds
- Hot-water freeze-dried extraction – seldom used but guarantees the highest bioactive compounds

Pick Appropriate Dosage
Picking the right dosage is crucial for maximum impact and minimum fallout. A good starting point is with 200-400 mg per day. See how you look, feel and perform after 2-4 weeks and measure if you think its working or not.
If it is not working, you can try another brand or try a higher dose.
Many of the brands on the list offer 400 mg and some up to 1000 mg per serving. Just make sure you check the dosage and serving size before you get started.
Check the Number of Pills per Bottle
Check how many pills come in your bottle to gauge the value and price per pill. This count is a crucial mix of your dosage, frequency and budget.
Powder vs Capsules
Powder or capsules comes down to personal preference. I much prefer capsules because they are convenient and easy to swallow. The powder is quite bitter and earthy and can't really be mixed into anything without ruining it.
Absorbs faster in the body
Can be easily mixed into shakes, smoothies, and juices
Offers flexibility in serving size
Can be incorporated into various foods
Bitterness makes it difficult to hide in things
Serving size needs to be measured
Not convenient for travelers
Most convenient form
Pre-measured precise dosage
Ideal for people on the go
Popular choice due to ease of use
Mask the bitter taste of Tongkat Ali
Takes longer to absorb into the body
Cannot easily be mixed into food or drinks
What color is it?
The powder tints depend on the root part used for extraction - darker for the bark, lighter for the insides. Make no mistake: color isn't the queen, but it hints at the source.
Potential Side Effects of Consuming Tongkat Ali
Some side effects of Tongkat Ali include headaches, upset stomach, increased alertness, restlessness, rashes and reduced sleep.
If you have any serious concerns like allergic reactions, adverse medication interactions, you must see a doctor immediately.
Also, if you have cancer, heart disease, a weak immune system or kidney disease then you are best to steer clear of this herb.
Remember, Tongkat Ali is mostly safe, but you always have to be cautious when trying to supplements.
How does Tongkat Ali affect women?
Studies show that tongkat ali can increase women's libido and free testosterone (7). Middle aged and aging women seem to do quite well using it for more energy and motivation.
However, the spotlight still needs more research backup.
Should Tongkat Ali be taken daily?
Yes, Tongkat Ali should be taken daily for 4-6 weeks before taking a 1 week rest without the supplement. This allows your body to absorb and get used to it without abusing the herb.
You can go forward with 4-6 week cycles and see how you feel after each cycle. And be sure to ask your doctor before ramping up the volume.
Is longjack the same as Tongkat Ali?
Longjack is the same as tongkat ali, these two words are synonyms and used interchangeably by different products and brands alike.
Where is the best place to buy Tongkat Ali supplements?
The best Tongkat Ali supplements can be purchased on Amazon, iherb or directly from a few brands online. Check the latest reviews for whatever product you are researching before you order. This allows you to see what recent batches of the product perform like.
Oftentimes, the most recent reviews tell us that a product is not the same as if used to be or that the capsules are not full.
Selecting the best Tongkat Ali supplement is a process that requires a meticulous evaluation of various factors. There is a ton of crap on the market and brands putting mysterious fillers that are not on the ingredient list. Don't believe the hype of concentration levels either as these can be manipulated.
If you are looking for a simple answer, I would recommend starting with the SOLARAY brand and see how you do after 4 weeks. It worked for me and is the brand I continuously come back to.
And if you need a convenient protein source, try Bluebird Provisions bone broth powder. It has 12 grams of collagen and tastes delicious.
Do you have any questions about these brands or another brand not on the list? Leave a comment and I will get back to you asap.
